Cleaning data in Power BI is essential for accurate analysis and reporting. By following these steps, you can efficiently clean your data in Power BI and ensure your analysis is based on accurate and structured information.

Step 1: Import Data

  1. Open Power BI Desktop: Start with a blank document.

  2. Get Data: Click on "Get Data" and select the source (e.g., an Excel workbook). Load the desired data into Power BI.

Step 2: View Data Structure

  1. Table View: Switch to the Table View to inspect the data structure. Identify any issues like blank columns or incorrect formats.

  2. Identify Problems: Look for gaps, missing information, or incorrect data types.

Step 3: Transform Data

  1. Open Power Query: Navigate to the Home tab and click on "Transform Data" to open Power Query.

  2. Change Data Types: Adjust the data types as necessary. For example, if a time column is incorrectly formatted, right-click and change it to the correct type.

Step 4: Remove Unwanted Data

  1. Remove Blanks: To clean up blank areas, right-click on the header of the column and select "Remove Empty" to eliminate null values while keeping relevant data intact.

  2. Remove Redundant Columns: Select any unnecessary columns by holding the Control key and right-click to remove them.

Step 5: Finalize Data Cleaning

  1. Check Data Types: Ensure all data types are correctly set before finalizing.

  2. Close and Apply: Once satisfied with the changes, click "Close & Apply" to load the cleaned data into Power BI.
